Huawei Designs Passive Optical Networking (PON) Technology

Huawei has now shifted its focus to the unfolding future of online connectivity, which is distinguished by smart homes, smart urban transportation, and smart manufacturing. It will also compose the new 50G Passive Optical Networking technology (PON). The firm confirmed that the new PON network is depicted for network operators as having cost efficiency, excellent performance both in bandwidth and connection quality, and support for a future technology roadmap. The 50G PON is described by International Telecommunications Union standards (ITU) as offering options for brand access of at most 50 gigabits of symmetrical bandwidth.

The president of Huawei Optical Business, Richard Jin, said that demand for internet access would come from imminent applications in the residential, SME, enterprise, and wholesale market segments for the next ten years and further. He explained that internet access demand is changing people’s lives and work and is also inviting more carriers and partners to join the F5.5G innovation. He also noted that approximately 5 million households were already using 1 Gbps home Wi-Fi connections worldwide. This advocated for the operators to deliver 10 Gbps services.

The China Telecom Research Institute has also partnered with Huawei to complete the globe’s first 50G PON-based industrial internet pilot. The 50G PON provides 10Gbps bandwidth for campuses, providing reliable and flexible access for industrial Automated Optical Inspection. Currently, Huawei is conducting a verification of its 50G PON solution with more than 30 partners worldwide.
