DStv is preparing to roll out a restructured lineup of streaming packages in South Africa on 17 September 2026, headlined by a standalone sports-only option that lets subscribers pay specifically for live sport instead of buying into the broader Premium tier.
Details that emerged from DStv’s show parent company MultiChoice simplifying its offering into five tiers: Starter, Select, Sports, Movies & Series, and Premium. The changes apply to streaming only packages; satellite decoder plans remain unchanged for now.
The new Sports package will carry 115 channels, combining live sport with some entertainment channels, priced at R399 per month, roughly Sh3,200 when converted, though the streaming packages are currently sold only in South Africa. It is expected to include the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League, IPL and ICC cricket, South Africa’s SA20 and Currie Cup, UFC, and at least one United Rugby Championship match weekly.
The move addresses a long standing complaint: DStv’s most sought after live sport had been locked behind its priciest Premium package. The new structure lets sports fans subscribe directly to what they want rather than pay for unwanted movies and series channels.
The other tiers are Starter (R99/month, 85 channels), Select (R299/month, 100 channels), Movies & Series (R500/month, 115 channels), and Premium (R799/month, 130 channels, the only legacy package keeping its name).
The overhaul follows Groupe Canal+’s R50 billion plus acquisition of MultiChoice, completed in September 2025, amid declining subscribers and revenue. Canal+’s R1.9 billion “boost plan” targets simplifying MultiChoice’s complex package structure, previously up to 17 packages across five decoder types, while lowering the entry cost for new subscribers.
