Spain are the 2026 FIFA World Cup champions after defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra time in a dramatic final at the New York New Jersey Stadium, securing their second World Cup title.

The final was a tense tactical battle, with both teams creating chances but unable to break the deadlock during the 90 minutes. Argentina, led by Lionel Messi in what many believe was his final World Cup appearance, defended resolutely while Spain dominated possession for long spells. The breakthrough finally arrived in extra time, when Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal to hand La Roja the biggest prize in world football.

Spain’s triumph capped an outstanding tournament in which they defeated several top-ranked opponents en route to the trophy. Their disciplined midfield, organised defence and clinical finishing proved decisive throughout the competition, while Argentina fell just short of defending their global crown.

The final dominated conversations across social media, with football fans celebrating Spain’s achievement while debating several controversial moments from the match.

Spanish supporters flooded social platforms with celebrations, praising Ferran Torres’ match-winning goal and the team’s composed performance under pressure. “Champions” quickly became one of the tournament’s defining online themes as fans celebrated Spain’s second World Cup title.

Argentine fans, however, expressed disappointment and frustration after the narrow defeat. Thousands backed an online petition calling for the final to be replayed, alleging controversial refereeing decisions influenced the outcome. The petition attracted more than 88,000 signatures, sparking heated debate across football communities worldwide.

Neutral fans described the final as an intense, tactical contest that showcased two of the world’s best national teams. Many praised Spain’s patience and resilience, while others applauded Argentina’s determined defensive display despite the heartbreaking loss. Discussions around refereeing decisions, Messi’s emotional farewell and Spain’s historic victory continued trending long after the final whistle.
