Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has registered a 10.1% growth in the Customs revenue collected at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Kshs 49.1 billion in the Financial year 2022/2023 from the Kshs 48.5 billion in FY’2021/2022. Additionally, the performance was above the target collection of Kshs 47.0 billion, representing a 104.4% target achievement.

The improved performance was on the back of an increase in cargo handling due to the improvement in economic activities after the COVID-19 pandemic, which led KRA to collect Kshs 5.4 billion from the air navigation service charge. This represented a 112.1% target achievement against the target collection of Kshs 4.8 billion for the FY’2022/2023.

Additionally, KRA was able to collect more from the air passenger service charge, collecting Kshs 11.6 billion, representing a target achievement of 114.0% against the target collection of Kshs 8.0 billion. The strong performance was due to an increase in the number of international and domestic passengers by 80.4% and 32.1%, respectively. The passenger traffic increased by 65.0% to 6.6 million passengers from 4.0 million passengers in FY’2021/2022.

Going forward, KRA is expecting to increase its revenue collection by implementing initiatives such as the installation of baggage and cargo scanners to enhance faster clearance of cargo at entry and the enhancement of staff capacity at various points of entry to effectively execute the revenue collection.
