President William Ruto has committed to completing key stadium renovations and construction ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the country will co-host with Tanzania and Uganda.

President Ruto announced, “We commit that Kasarani and Nyayo will be ready by the end of this year for African Nations Championships 2025, while Talanta Sports City Stadium will be completed by December 2025 for AFCON 2027.”

The ambitious infrastructure project involves the renovation of two existing stadiums – Kasarani and Nyayo – and the construction of the brand new Talanta Sports City Stadium. These venues are crucial to Kenya’s preparations for co-hosting the continental football tournament, which will be held for the first time across three nations.

President Ruto expressed confidence in the progress of the stadium preparations, stating, “The preparations ofour three stadia are progressing well.” This assurance comes as Kenya gears up to host its part of the 36th edition of the biennial African football tournament.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Patrice Motsepe, recently met with President Ruto at State House Nairobi. According to Ruto, “Mr Motsepe expressed satisfaction with the preparations of AFCON.”

The 2027 edition of AFCON will be a landmark event, as it marks the first time the tournament will be hosted across three countries: Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Scheduled to take place in June and July 2027, this will also be the first time the competition returns to the CECAFA region since it was hosted by Ethiopia in 1976.

The tournament will feature matches in nine stadiums across the three nations, with Kenya contributing significant venues including the new Talanta Sports City Stadium and the existing Kasarani and Nyayo stadia.

The planned venues for AFCON 2027 include several prominent stadiums across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. In Kenya, the Moi International Sports Centre, Nyayo National Stadium, and the Talanta Sports City Stadium are set to play pivotal roles. This expansive and multi-national approach is aimed at broadening the reach of the tournament and engaging more fans across the continent.
