The power of gratitude in enhancing mental wellbeing

Gratitude is the quality of being grateful for what is valuable and meaningful to oneself, whether tangible or intangible. It involves recognizing the good things in our lives and appreciating every little one. Embracing gratitude amidst challenges is not about ignoring the challenges but about acknowledging the positive aspects of our lives, which can be a source of strength during hardships.

We live in a world where contentment is very rare. Everyone seems to be looking for something better without showing appreciation for what we have. Even during hardships, it is important to remind yourself of the little positive things in your life.

Mark Manson wrote that, “The desire for more positive experience is itself a negative experience. And, paradoxically, the acceptance of one’s negative experience is itself a positive experience.” This simply means that we should shift our focus from trying to escape negative experiences and focus on the positive amidst the negative situation. Some of the benefits of embracing gratitude are outlined below.

  • Improved mental wellbeing

Gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have. Being consumed in negative thoughts can be detrimental to our mental health. Research by the Alzheimer’s Association found that repetitive negative thinking is linked to cognitive decline. Although it is important to feel and express negative emotions, we should not be so caught up in the negativity that we are blinded from the positive things in life.

Gratitude encourages a growth mindset by helping us see challenges as opportunities for growth and learning.  It shifts our focus from what we cannot control to what we can influence and improve.

  • Resilience

Gratitude keeps us resilient during difficulties. This is because your ability to cope with difficulties is improved when your focus is on the positive aspects of the situation. Making it through challenges also builds confidence in one’s ability.

Gratitude is a mindset that often requires practice to master. It is important to be patient with yourself when going through challenges.
