Kenyan banks push for green financing

Kenya’s banking industry has launched a new sustainable finance roadmap aimed at increasing funding for environmentally responsible projects and helping businesses manage climate-related risks. The framework, unveiled in Nairobi on November 3, 2026, was developed by the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) in partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and WWF-Kenya.The Banking Industry Sustainable Finance Roadmap provides a framework for integrating environmental and social considerations into banking operations, particularly lending decisions, risk management, governance and financial reporting. It is intended to guide financial institutions in directing more capital towards projects that support sustainable and inclusive economic growth.

The initiative comes as businesses increasingly face financial risks associated with climate change, including unpredictable weather patterns, water shortages and disruptions to agricultural production. These challenges can affect business operations, profitability and the ability of borrowers to repay loans.By incorporating climate and nature-related risks into lending assessments, banks will be better positioned to evaluate the long-term sustainability of businesses seeking financing. This means that factors beyond traditional financial performance could increasingly inform how lenders assess potential borrowers and investment opportunities.

For businesses, particularly micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), the roadmap could create opportunities to access financing for sustainable projects. Companies investing in renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable agriculture and environmentally responsible production could benefit from increased attention towards green investments. For example, a manufacturing business seeking to install solar energy systems could potentially access financing through sustainable finance initiatives. Such investments could reduce dependence on conventional electricity, lower operating costs and improve long-term business resilience.

However, access to green financing will still depend on factors such as the project’s financial viability, repayment capacity and the ability to demonstrate its expected environmental or social benefits. The roadmap does not automatically guarantee cheaper loans or funding for every business adopting environmentally friendly practices.KBA Chairman and KCB Group Chief Executive Officer Paul Russo noted that the framework would help move the banking industry beyond sustainability commitments towards practical implementation. It is also expected to strengthen how financial institutions identify and manage climate-related financial risks while directing capital towards sustainable investments.

The partnership with IFC and WWF-Kenya further highlights the importance of collaboration between financial institutions and environmental organisations in mobilising private-sector investment.Ultimately, the roadmap represents a shift in how sustainability is being incorporated into Kenya’s financial sector. As implementation progresses, businesses may need to consider not only their financial performance but also their environmental impact and long-term resilience when seeking financing. For Kenya, expanding sustainable finance could help unlock investment in environmentally responsible enterprises while strengthening the banking sector’s ability to support a more resilient economy.
