Kenya’s national football team, the Harambee Stars, has failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals after drawing 1-1 with Zimbabwe in Polokwane, South Africa, on Friday, November 15, 2024. The result ended Kenya’s hopes of securing a spot in the prestigious tournament.
Head coach Engin Firat identified the team’s inability to score goals as the key issue that hindered their qualification campaign. “It’s clear we have a goal-scoring problem that needs a solution,” Firat said. “We failed to capitalize on our chances, and that was our biggest problem.” He further expressed regret that this issue could not be addressed earlier in the campaign, adding, “I wish we could have changed it, but we couldn’t.”
Firat also acknowledged the tactical challenge posed by Zimbabwe, who played defensively and used counter-attacks to threaten Kenya’s goal. “The game played out as we expected. Zimbabwe relied on long balls to their fast players. Both sides fought hard, but in the end, we couldn’t break them down,” Firat explained.
Despite the disappointment of missing out on AFCON qualification, Firat praised his players for their efforts. “They gave everything until the last second. They deserved more,” the coach stated. He also acknowledged the frustrations of Kenyan fans but reminded them that the players had given their best throughout the campaign.
Firat did not shy away from expressing his concerns about the state of Kenyan football. “Maybe we need to realize what we have and stop dreaming. I’ve pointed out the problems with our football several times, and it’s only getting worse,” he said. “We need to face reality and stop focusing on what we want and instead ask ourselves what we have.”
