The 2026 FIFA World Cup is well underway across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, and the opening round of matches has already delivered goals, surprises, and plenty of online debate. With 48 teams competing in the biggest World Cup ever, fans around the world are beginning to identify early favorites while celebrating several standout performances.

Co-hosts Mexico got their campaign off to a strong start with a 2-0 victory over South Africa in the tournament opener at the Estadio Azteca. The win gave Mexico an early advantage in Group A and generated significant excitement among home supporters. South Korea also started positively, defeating Czech Republic 2-1 to join Mexico at the top of the group.

Among the most eye-catching results so far was Germany’s dominant 7-1 victory over Curaçao, a performance that immediately positioned the Germans among the tournament favorites. The United States also impressed with a convincing 4-1 win over Paraguay, while Sweden thrashed Tunisia 5-1. Elsewhere, Brazil were held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco, and the Netherlands played out a 2-2 draw with Japan.

Other notable results include Canada drawing 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar sharing the points with Switzerland in a 1-1 stalemate, Australia beating Türkiye 2-0, Scotland edging Haiti 1-0, and Ivory Coast securing a narrow 1-0 victory over Ecuador.

Online, fan reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. Many supporters have praised the atmosphere inside stadiums, with FIFA reporting near-capacity crowds during the opening matches. Fans have highlighted the strong attendances, vibrant fan festivals, and competitive games as signs that the expanded tournament format is working.

Social media discussions have largely centered around Germany’s explosive attack, Mexico’s strong start on home soil, and the impressive performance of the United States. Meanwhile, Morocco’s draw against Brazil and Japan’s resilience against the Netherlands have earned praise from neutrals who believe both sides could emerge as surprise contenders.

Early fan sentiment suggests that Germany, England, Argentina, and France are among the teams most frequently tipped to challenge for the trophy, while many observers have identified Japan and Morocco as potential dark horses capable of upsetting football’s traditional powers.

With the group stage still in its early stages, the 2026 FIFA World Cup has already delivered the drama, atmosphere, and global conversation that make the tournament the biggest spectacle in world football.
