Electric bus company BasiGo has announced the appointment of Moses Nderitu as Managing Director for its Kenya operations, in a move that signals the firm’s ambitions to be a leader in green transport solutions across the African nation.
The announcement comes as Nairobi seeks to phase out older, polluting diesel buses and transition to newer and cleaner electric models. BasiGo aims to deploy 1,000 locally-assembled electric buses to Nairobi bus operators by 2026 through its innovative financing model that allows bus owners to pay for the vehicles as they drive them.
Mr Nderitu joined BasiGo in March 2022 as Chief Revenue Officer and will now take on the additional role of overseeing the company’s entire Kenya business. Seen as one of the leading advocates for electric mobility in the country, he has been instrumental in introducing e-bus technology to the local matatu sector and securing reservations from over 450 Nairobi bus operators.
“BasiGo is privileged to have Moses Nderitu, an exceptional entrepreneur and leader, taking the helm of BasiGo Kenya,” said Jit Bhattacharya, BasiGo CEO and Co-founder. “With over 90% of Kenya’s electricity coming from renewable energy, Kenya has the potential to be a global leader in clean, affordable, and smart public transport. I can think of no one better to make that vision a reality than Moses Nderitu.”
The company currently has 19 electric buses operating with 6 Nairobi bus operators. Prior to joining BasiGo, Mr Nderitu served as Director and Regulatory Advisor at ARC Ride and was a Board Member and Vice Chair at the National Transport and Safety Authority for six years.
