President William Ruto announced on Wednesday that the Kenya Kwanza government will implement the housing levy at all costs.

While speaking at the Kenya Diaspora Investment Conference (KDIC) at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Ruto defended the project by saying it was also in Azimio’s manifesto.

“When it came to the implementation, my friend, that is where the devil lives. Nobody wanted it implemented. I am telling you this time round I am implementing it,” Ruto said.

Additionally, he said other countries like Korea and Malaysia managed to successfully implement the housing levy, making them more successful than Kenya.

On November 28, the high court issued stay orders on the implementation of the judgment that rendered the Housing Levy unconstitutional.

A trio of judges, comprising Justices Lawrence Mugambi, Christine Meoli, and David Majanja, rendered the decision shortly after pronouncing the levy to be unconstitutional, null, and void.

George Murugara, the state’s attorney, had requested a 45-day stay of the orders from the court.

As a result, Kenyans will keep contributing 1.5% of their income to the fund, with an equal contribution from their employers, until January 10, 2024.
