Elon Musk’s X accused of stifling Kenyan protest hashtags despite free speech claims

Elon Musk’s social media platform X has come under scrutiny for allegedly suppressing hashtags related to the ongoing protests in Kenya against the proposed Finance Bill 2024.

The hashtag #RejectFinanceBill2024, which has been pivotal in rallying opposition to the bill, appears to be missing from the platform’s autosuggest feature, raising concerns about censorship and the platform’s commitment to free speech.

The Finance Bill 2024 in Kenya has sparked widespread opposition among citizens, political leaders, and various sectors of society. The bill includes several contentious provisions that would significantly raise taxes on essential goods and services, prompting fears that it would unduly burden the most vulnerable populations, increase the cost of living, and hinder economic growth. As a result, a decentralized mass protest movement has emerged, with citizens utilizing social media to voice their concerns and organize resistance.

The hashtag #RejectFinanceBill2024 has become a central tool for these activists, gaining significant traction on social media platforms. Many Kenyans have used the hashtag to share information, coordinate protests, and call for the rejection of the bill. The movement has also received substantial support from Kenyans in the diaspora, with the hashtag trending in various countries around the world. At some point, it was trending at number one worldwide.

However, users on X have noticed that the platform’s autosuggest feature does not provide #RejectFinanceBill2024 as an option, despite its popularity. This anomaly becomes more glaring considering that a manual search of other suggested hashtags can lead users to tweets containing #RejectFinanceBill2024. This discrepancy has led to accusations that X is deliberately suppressing the hashtag, thereby hindering the protest movement’s ability to reach a wider audience.

Some of the autosuggest features appearing when you type #RejectFinanceBill2024

The suppression of #RejectFinanceBill2024 stands in stark contrast to Elon Musk’s repeated assertions that X is a platform committed to free speech. Musk has often highlighted the importance of allowing diverse viewpoints and fostering open discourse. The current situation in Kenya, however, suggests a deviation from this principle, raising questions about the platform’s true stance on freedom of expression.

The movement against the Finance Bill 2024 shows no signs of waning, with protests continuing to erupt across Kenya. Citizens are leveraging social media to share MPs’ contact details, organize demonstrations, and amplify their calls for the bill’s rejection. The suppression of the #RejectFinanceBill2024 hashtag on X is seen by many as a significant obstacle to their efforts.

In response to the allegations, there have been calls for transparency from X and its leadership. Users are demanding an explanation for the apparent suppression and urging the platform to restore the visibility of the hashtag to ensure that the voices of Kenyan protesters are heard.
