Ruto is not my president, Karua says

Narc Kenya leader and Azimio co-principal Martha Karua says she does not recognize William Ruto as the president. She said the process that saw Ruto sworn in as president was flawed, and that is one of the reasons she does not recognize him at all.

“Ruto is not my president. I reckon he is in office; however, he got there. I don’t believe in the process that was given to him because it was flawed. At least I have the freedom to say so. I do not believe the process that gave him the presidency,” Karua said.

William Ruto defeated Azimion la Umoja, who later contested the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s (IEBC) results at the Supreme Court. The court upheld IEBC’s results and paved the way for Ruto’s presidency, but Karua pointed out why she feels the process was flawed.

Ruto garnered 7.1 million votes against Raila’s 6.9 million votes.

She went ahead to highlight that she disagreed with the Supreme Court decision that upheld William Ruto as the winner of the August 9, 2022, election.

“I don’t agree with the court’s decision where it found that three is a majority out of seven. Even without saying so, if four commissioners say they cannot support the presidential declaration and the court trashes them, it legitimizes that three can overrule four in a panel,” Karua explained.

Four ex-IEBC commissioners had disputed the presidential elections set to be announced by the Chebukati. They claimed that they couldn’t take ownership of the results because of the opaque nature with which they had been handled.

“Chebukati’s decision was forced upon us. Even if it binds us, I don’t have to believe in it. That’s all I’m saying.” Karua added

Karua further affirmed that the Azimio la Umoja coalition is together following the report of eight-month reconciliation talks between the government and the opposition. Karua is one of the leaders who has opposed the NADCO report, but at least she has said their coalition is intact despite the divergent views.

On the 2027 elections, Karua stated, “2027 is distant; she will pronounce it when the time comes. Even if ten other people express their desires for 2027, she is not in any hurry and remains totally unrattled.”
