Off-season, on-point: Discovering the magic of Lamu in May

It starts with a feeling. The kind that creeps in quietly, somewhere between too much noise and too little peace. You find yourself craving stillness. Sunlight. Salt in your hair. A place where no one’s in a rush and even time seems to breathe slower. And then you hear it not loudly, but just enough. “Come to Lamu”.

May in Kenya isn’t the obvious choice. That’s what makes it perfect. While the world holds its breath for the July rush, the smart travellers, the ones who don’t follow crowds are slipping away to the coast. And not just any coast. Lamu Island.   There are no cars here. With dhows, and centuries-old stone paths that lead you through Swahili history and stillness. The island doesn’t shout, it with culture, with colour, with the scent of spices in the air and stories in every breeze off the sea.

In May, the rains have just passed, leaving everything clean, blooming, and deeply alive. The beaches are empty. The tides are soft. The world feels paused, just for you.   You’ll wander the narrow alleys of Lamu Old Town, sip strong kahawa under palm-fringed verandahs, and watch the sun melt into the ocean from the bow of a dhow.

There’s no itinerary. No alarm clocks. Just the rhythm of waves and the warm laughter of locals who know your name by the second day.   Your villa? Tucked between the trees, a private hideaway with the ocean as your soundtrack. Luxury here isn’t loud. It’s intentional. Personal.
