Kenyan farmers are likely to benefit from Germany’s agricultural sector reform funding, which is targeted at improving the country’s food and nutrition security.
The agreement was signed following a meeting between German authorities and the Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi at the ongoing 2023 Global Forum for Food and Agriculture in Berlin, Germany.
According to CS Linturi, the investment is consistent with the government of Kenya’s objective to transform agriculture by raising the incomes of small-scale farmers, pastoralists, and fish farmers, as well as agricultural output and value addition.

The CS praised the German government for continuing to fund numerous agricultural programs in the country through the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), which he ascribed to the sector’s good effects.
CS Linturi also urged the German government to implement a thorough national agricultural soil management program following the adoption of the agriculture soil management policy.
The director of GIZ’s division for agriculture and rural development, Cristel Well, reaffirmed GIZ’s commitment to continuing to assist Kenya by assisting with the implementation of drought-resilience measures for increased productivity.
“We want to help transform agriculture in Kenya through our agency to ensure rural women are empowered since they are the backbone of rural farming,” Weller indicated.
Over the years, Germany has remained committed to supporting projects and initiatives within the framework of bilateral development cooperation between Germany and Kenya, particularly in the areas of agriculture and rural development, climate change, health and water, water resource management, and sanitation.
Among them are the allocation of resources for the preparation of the Agricultural Soil Management Policy, which is scheduled to be presented to the Cabinet in February 2023, youth employment in agriculture (YEA), the Agri-Jobs 4 Youth Initiative, Green Innovation centers for agriculture and food sector, soil protection and rehabilitation for food security, and the nutrition-sensitive Potato Partnership Project.
Others include Green Innovation Centers (GIAE) for the Agriculture and Food Sector, Global Low Carbon Tea-Triangular Cooperation between China, Germany, and Kenya on Tea Value Chain in Kenya, Coffee Innovation Fund, and Water and Energy for Food.
