The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has launched a major recruitment drive, offering 46,000 teaching positions across the country. This significant move, announced in the MyGov bulletin on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, comes in response to prolonged staffing shortages in schools, particularly at the Junior Secondary level.

Out of the available positions, 6,000 will be filled in primary schools, while 39,550 are designated for Junior Secondary Schools. An additional 450 positions will be filled in secondary schools. This development follows months of uncertainty and pressure from teachers’ unions, which resulted in strikes in August.

“This announcement is a positive step towards resolving long-standing issues in the teaching profession,” said Wilson Sossion, a prominent union leader. “Teachers have been waiting for job security, and this recruitment will go a long way in addressing the staffing gaps we’ve had for years.”

Addressing Teacher Job Security

The recruitment drive seeks to confirm thousands of intern teachers into permanent and pensionable positions, a move that could potentially end the ongoing disputes with teachers’ unions. Many interns have been on short-term contracts and have been demanding job security and improved benefits.

“This is a welcome development for teachers, especially those who have been working under internship contracts,” said a spokesperson for the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET). “We expect this process to be transparent and to prioritize those who have served as interns.”

How to Apply

The application process for these positions is straightforward. Applicants for primary school positions must hold a minimum of a P1 certificate, while candidates for Junior Secondary and secondary schools must have a diploma in education. All applicants must also be registered with the TSC.

Candidates are required to submit their applications online through the official TSC website by midnight on October 7, 2024. “Interested and qualified candidates should submit their applications online through the Teachers Service Commission’s website, www.tsc.go.ke, under ‘Careers’ or teachersonline.tsc.go.ke,” read the official notice from TSC.
