President William Ruto has announced plans for the forceful evacuation of individuals at risk of flooding, coinciding with the Meteorological Department’s warning of impending heavy rains. Ruto has convened a multiagency disaster response team at State House to address the crisis.

Thus far, over 110,000 people have been displaced, and public infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and dams, has suffered billions in damages. Ruto emphasized the potential use of force to safeguard lives and prevent further devastation.

“I will be having another emergency session tomorrow with multi-agency teams to make sure we provide adequate support to all those in need and to move citizens who are in dangerous areas that may be susceptible to floods.” he said

The President said the National Youth Service had been instructed to set aside land to resettle those affected.

“I have authorised the National Youth Service to move some of these people to to safe ground as we decide what to do with them,” Ruto said.

“I will be having another emergency session tomorrow with multi-agency teams to make sure we provide adequate support to all those in need and to move citizens who are in dangerous areas that may be susceptible to floods.”

The head of state further highlighted the necessity of a comprehensive flood response strategy, stressing the involvement of all relevant agencies such as the military, police, and various ministries. He expressed satisfaction with the military’s assistance, noting their recent collaboration with response teams in areas like Machakos.

“The rains have been truly a blessing to us as a nation and we have seen a lot of turnarounds because of the rains. We have a challenge now of floods in different areas and therefore it is important for us to be proactive, there are citizens living in very dangerous places and those are the most vulnerable at this point.”

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, assigned to spearhead the emergency response, will convene meetings with various stakeholders, including development partners, to enhance cooperation. Gachagua announced the activation of the multi-agency emergency response center at Nyayo House starting at 4 pm today.

He urged Kenyans to collaborate with emergency teams to ensure their safety and that of their families, assuring affected families of provisions for both food and non-food items.
