The Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) has commenced the deployment of its troops to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as part of a United Nations peacekeeping mission aimed at stabilizing the volatile eastern region of the country.

The deployment, announced on Sunday, is part of the fourth contingent of the Kenya Quick Reaction Force (KENQRF 4), which has been tasked with supporting the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (Monusco).

The first batch of KENQRF 4 was officially flagged off on Saturday, marking the beginning of their mission. The force is expected to play a critical role in addressing the deadly tensions in the eastern DRC, an area plagued by armed groups that have caused significant instability.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Stephen Kapkory, the base commander of Embakasi Air Base, emphasized the importance of the mission and the expectations placed on the troops. “I am confident in your level of training and professionalism. Be good ambassadors of the Republic of Kenya by maintaining a high sense of professionalism and discipline in all your undertakings and uphold the exemplary performance registered by your predecessors,” Kapkory stated.

KDF noted that the deployment aligns with Monusco’s intensified efforts in protecting civilians, reforming the security sector, and disarming and reintegrating combatants. The Kenyan troops will be engaged in various operations, including combating armed groups, protecting civilians, supporting humanitarian initiatives, and aiding in the disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration of former combatants.

Kenya has a distinguished history of contributing to international peacekeeping missions in countries such as Somalia, South Sudan, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, reflecting its ongoing commitment to regional and global peace and security.

Commander of KENQRF 4, Simon Seda, expressed confidence in his troops’ readiness for the mission. “Our men and women are prepared for the task ahead. They have undergone rigorous training and are equipped with the necessary skills to execute this mission effectively. We are committed to contributing to the restoration of peace and stability in the DRC,” Seda remarked.
