Impeachment motion filed against Kericho governor Mutai

In a dramatic turn of events in Kericho County, a motion seeking the impeachment of Governor Erick Mutai has been officially tabled at the county assembly. Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony introduced the motion, highlighting four critical charges against the governor: gross violation of the constitution, violation of national and county laws, abuse of office, and gross misconduct.

Rogony accused Governor Mutai of serious financial mismanagement, stating, “The governor has been involved in misappropriating, misallocating, and illegally withdrawing county funds and revenue.” He emphasized that these actions not only contravene legal statutes but also tarnish the reputation of the governor’s office, the assembly, and the citizens of Kericho. “His actions have brought ridicule, embarrassment, and disrepute to our institutions,” Rogony added, underscoring the need for accountability.

The motion further asserts that Governor Mutai’s continued leadership undermines effective service delivery, directly harming the residents who placed their trust in him. “The governor has repeatedly committed constitutional violations that disrupt the structure of government and compromise the integrity of both the office and the constitution,” Rogony claimed, painting a picture of a leader who has failed to uphold the principles of good governance.

As the political landscape in Kericho becomes increasingly contentious, County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mutai has announced that the assembly will convene on October 2 to deliberate on the motion. During this session, Governor Mutai will be given the opportunity to defend himself against the allegations. The outcome of this impeachment motion could have significant implications for the governance of Kericho County and may set a precedent for how issues of accountability are handled at the local level.
