On Thursday, March 9, opposition leader Raila Odinga announced the launch of a mass protest to force President Wiliam Ruto to meet his demands.

Raila issued the directive after Azimio la Umoja, the leader of the One Kenya Coalition, handed the President a 14-day ultimatum.

“On March 20, 2023, we have a date with destiny, and we call on you all to come to Nairobi where we will conduct a major procession,” Raila announced.

Ruto was urged by Raila to address the high cost of living and speed up the opening of the servers for the 2022 presidential election.

As he launched the creation of the Movement for Defence of Democracy (MDD), Raila alleged that President William Ruto disregarded his requests that the cost of necessities be lowered, the IEBC servers be made accessible, and the Azimio La Umoja be included in the selection of IEBC commissioners.

Raila remarked that the double taxation used by the Kenya Kwanza government was affecting many enterprises, particularly those run by small-scale dealers.

He claimed that President Ruto’s choice to import GMO crops like maize was detrimental to Kenyan farmers and businesses. Raila added that the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) commissioner appointments should not have continued under the Ruto government.

The ODM Party leader also defended the four Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners who controversially resigned after the August 2022 General Election.

Raila claimed that during the Presidential Election petition against President William Ruto, Supreme Court judges treated Azimio La Umoja with contempt.
