Apple Unveils iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max With Higher Prices and AI Upgrades

Apple has broken with its traditional iPhone launch strategy, unveiling the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max while holding back the standard iPhone 18 until next year. The move signals a sharper focus on premium customers at a time when smartphone makers are dealing with rising component costs and intensifying competition in artificial intelligence.

The new iPhone 18 Pro models, unveiled on September 9, start at $1,199 for the Pro and $1,299 for the Pro Max, making them $100 more expensive than their predecessors. Pre-orders open on September 12, with sales beginning September 18.

The biggest hardware upgrade is the camera system. Apple has introduced a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, allowing the camera to adjust how much light enters the lens and giving users greater control over depth of field and low-light photography. The company has also introduced additional camera controls and a smaller Dynamic Island.

Under the hood, the phones are powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip, paired with a next-generation vapor chamber designed to improve sustained performance. Apple is also highlighting longer battery life, with the Pro Max receiving what the company describes as its biggest battery-life improvement in an iPhone.

But the more interesting development may be what Apple has chosen not to release. Unlike previous years, the standard iPhone 18 was absent from the September launch. Reports indicate that Apple is delaying the regular model, alongside other lower-priced devices, until around spring 2027.

That split could be strategically important. By launching its most expensive models first, Apple can concentrate demand on devices with higher margins while potentially spreading its product cycle across more of the year. Rising memory and component costs have also increased pressure on smartphone manufacturers, making premium devices more attractive from a profitability standpoint.

Apple has also made artificial intelligence a bigger part of the new lineup, with Siri AI and additional on-device capabilities forming part of its effort to catch up in an increasingly AI-driven smartphone market.

The launch, however, was overshadowed by an even bigger announcement; Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, which starts at $1,999. The device opens into a 7.6-inch display and supports multitasking and Apple Pencil input, marking Apple’s entry into a category dominated by Android manufacturers.

The question now is whether Apple can convince consumers that its latest premium features justify higher prices or whether the company is gradually turning the iPhone into an increasingly exclusive product.
