MyDawa, a Kenyan e-pharmacy startup, has received Ksh145 million (USD1.2 million) from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, aimed at creating the first telehealth program in the country, with the goal of lowering HIV prevalence.

On Monday, October 24, at the Grand Challenges Annual Meeting, the company acknowledged that it has already created a virtual healthcare solution intended to make it simple for people to get PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) services.

“Health equity shouldn’t just be a statement of why we do this work. It should guide how we do it,” said Kedest Tesfagiorgis, deputy director of Global Partnerships & Grand Challenges at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

“When we support locally-led innovation, we maximize impact by bringing different kinds of knowledge and perspectives to the fore.”
