Kenya has made notable progress in global military rankings, securing the 11th spot in Africa and the 83rd position worldwide, according to the latest annual assessment by Global Firepower.

Egypt leads Africa with the strongest military, followed by Algeria, Nigeria, South Africa, and Ethiopia. Other countries such as Angola, Morocco, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, and Libya also feature in Africa’s top 10 strongest military forces. Globally, Kenya’s military performance has seen significant improvement, with its current position at 83rd reflecting enhanced capabilities in terms of resources and operational efficiency.

The Global Firepower assessment evaluates military strength using several key factors, including financial capacity, logistical resources, and strategic positioning. The size of a nation’s armed forces is also crucial in this evaluation. For instance, Egypt’s military is particularly strong due to its large personnel base, with over 400,000 active service members. The country’s advanced military assets, such as modern fighter jets like the F-16s and sophisticated naval systems, contribute to its top rank.

While Kenya’s rise in the rankings highlights its growing military capabilities, it remains behind other African powerhouses like Egypt and Algeria. The assessment underscores the importance of military investments in addressing regional challenges such as terrorism and instability. Kenya’s strategic positioning and its increasing focus on modernizing its forces have contributed to its improved ranking.

The Global Firepower report also noted the significant disparity between African nations, with countries like Benin, the Central African Republic, Somalia, and Burkina Faso ranking among Africa’s weakest militaries. These rankings highlight the varied levels of military preparedness across the continent, shaped by factors such as national security priorities, financial resources, and geopolitical considerations.
