The communication Authority of Kenya, CA, has said that the updating of SIM card registration details, whose deadline is set for October 15, will not be extended.
Liston Kirui, the Assistant Director of Telecoms Licensing and Compliance at the authority, says the deadline remains in place.
However, Mr Kirui said the registration is an ongoing process, and telcos will continue to offer services on the suspended lines after the lapse of the period, but the process will become more tedious than it is now.

“SIM registration is a continuous process. Operators are not going to stop the exercise because of the 15th October deadline. We expect them to continue with the process.” said Kirui.
“After the 15th October deadline, subscribers whose lines will have been deactivated will still have an opportunity to re-register. Of course, they will have more to do after being deactivated,”
The registration deadline was initially set for April 15 but was extended by 6 months to October 15 after public outcry. The authority says the move is aimed at weeding out the usage of telcos by fraudsters, a trend that has gained momentum in the recent past.
“SIM card registration is an avenue of protecting consumers from other risks that abound from using unregistered SIM cards, particularly in perpetrating crimes,” said CA.
