Strategies for confident decision-making amidst uncertainty

Uncertainties refer to conditions characterized by a lack of predictability regarding future outcomes, often leading to a sense of doubt. The root of uncertainties is often the lack of adequate information needed to make the most appropriate decision in a situation or the feeling of lack of control in situations. This can result in anxiety and stress leading to indecision.

“In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.” This quote is attributed to Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States. An insight from this is that one should not let uncertainty paralyze their decision-making. Life goes on, and we need to be making decisions constantly. It is better to make a bad decision than to live with the ‘what if’ regrets of indecision.

Uncertainties will always exist in every aspect of life because at no particular moment in history have human beings been 100% accurate. Therefore, we need to build the confidence to be able to make tough decisions with the little information we have. Facing uncertainties with confidence can build resilience and a stronger mindset.

One of the most effective ways of embracing uncertainties is having a positive mindset. It is important to always focus on the best-case scenarios as the outcome of decisions amidst uncertainties. This does not imply that other scenarios with less appealing outcomes should be ignored. While it is important to analyze every possible outcome of a decision, the focus should always be on the best-case scenarios.

Uncertainties are avenues for continuous learning and growth.  Learning is a life-long process that will sometimes include unlearning and relearning. When faced with uncertainties, it is important to direct your attention to lessons you can draw from the situation. Lessons learnt during uncertain times stick long and impact future decisions.

Certainty is a comfort zone that demands little effort from us. It is only through embracing uncertainties that we can foster change and challenge our limits. Human beings have not evolved this far for us to stay in our comfort zone. Whatever you need to do, do it now, even with uncertainties.
