The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has instructed parents and guardians of school children to prioritize road safety as schools prepare to reopen in May.

In an announcement on April 19, 2024, NTSA emphasized that it is crucial for parents to confirm whether their children’s schools have followed the Ministry of Transport’s directive. Specifically, parents are urged to personally check if school buses have undergone the necessary inspections.

NTSA emphasized that the compulsory inspection aimed to ensure the safety of school transportation. The directive aligns with a previous order issued by Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who mandated the inspection of all school vehicles to address the increasing rate of accidents.

“We humbly request parents/guardians to reach out to their children’s schools to establish whether they have complied with the directive and all the requirements of the Traffic Act,” read part of the statement.

NTSA in a statement pointed out that several schools presented their vehicles for inspection which was an implementation of the directive by Murkomen. The inspection involved the assessment of the vehicles’ mechanical soundness and whether the speed limiters installed on them are functional.

When issuing the directive regarding school buses, CS Murkomen also declared the immediate prohibition of illegal Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) from operating.

Furthermore, he cautioned that unauthorized PSVs, including private vehicles such as Probox, Noah, and Voxies, would face impoundment. Additionally, Murkomen emphasized that both owners and operators of these illegal PSVs would be prosecuted in accordance with traffic regulations.
