Young lawyer Melissa Ng’ania has gained notoriety in Kenya’s legal community as a result of her participation in the presidential election petition hearings at the Supreme Court.

Melissa, 38, holds a master’s degree from the Kenya School of Law and is among the country’s High Court and Supreme Court’s young lawyers. In the just concluded Presidential election petition at the supreme court, Ng’ania was William Ruto’s representative.

This is not the first time Melissa appeared at the apex court. Ms Ng’ania made headlines in 2017 after appearing as a member of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s legal team, which was defending him in the 2017 Presidential election petition filed by Raila Odinga.

Melissa, the sixth child in a family of six, was born in 1980. She was born in Saboat village of Mount Elegon, which borders Kenya and Uganda. She completed her “O” level work at Tororo High School base in Uganda after completing her elementary education in Kitale town, Trans Nzoia. Later, she studied law at Makerere University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Law ( LLB). She later joined the Kenya School of Law, where she completed her Master’s degree. She received her bar admission in 2011.

She has experience working for some of Kenya’s most famous law companies, including Nelson Havi’s Havi and Company Advocates before she teamed up with Steve Wairegi to form Wairegi and Company Associates. She was one of the 24 female attorneys actively involved in the presidential petition before the Supreme Court of the nation right now.

Melissa counsels young people to make the best decisions possible when choosing their career paths.

“You should not be frightened to network because you never know where your luck will lead you,” Mellisa says.

During the 2013 presidential petition, Kethi Kilonzo was the Supreme Court’s youngest attorney. Despite her advanced age, Kethi was a great inspiration to many Kenyans, particularly young ladies.

She spoke on behalf of the Africa Centre for Open Governance (AfriCOG), which had petitioned against the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta due to many irregularities in voter registration, electronic voter identification, and counting.
