Governor Wavinya Ndeti has opted to waive the medical expenses for individuals affected by the recent Machakos road accident that occurred on Monday evening according to a statement provided by the county’s health executive Dr. Daniel Yumbya.
As of 10:00 PM Monday, the death toll from the accident was reported to be nine. Among those admitted to Machakos Level 5 Hospital, 24 out of 34 victims were listed in critical condition at that time, with four of them classified as being in extremely critical states.
Yumbya further clarified that out of the nine fatalities, eight occurred at the scene, while one individual was pronounced dead upon arrival at Machakos Level 5 hospital.
The response efforts involved the immediate dispatch of county government ambulances to transport 34 accident victims to the hospital.
Yumbya emphasized that medical personnel were diligently attending to the critical cases, with ten victims successfully resuscitated and stabilized.
Additional medical staff, including doctors and nurses, were mobilized to ensure round-the-clock care for all patients. Security measures were heightened at the hospital to restrict access to critical care wards, while a dedicated desk was established to assist relatives seeking information and support.
The tragic incident involved a Matatu on the Katangi-Machakos-Kitui-Nairobi road, resulting in eight immediate fatalities and numerous serious injuries.
Yatta subcounty police commander Jane Makau confirmed the details, noting that traffic officers promptly responded to the scene, facilitated the removal of bodies to the hospital mortuary, and arranged for the wreckage to be inspected.
