Uasin Gishu County has taken a significant step towards sustainable transportation by launching its first electric vehicle (EV) charging station. Located outside the KVDA building in Eldoret, this initiative is a collaboration with Kenya Power and is set to promote greener mobility across the region.

The announcement was made by Governor Jonathan Bii during the Energy and Lighting Conference 2024, held in Eldoret. Governor Bii, who test drove an electric vehicle at the event, highlighted the potential of EVs to transform transportation.

“Electric vehicles are a game-changer, offering not only reduced fuel costs but also a substantial reduction in environmental impact,” he stated.

The EV charging station is expected to serve as a vital resource for residents who own electric cars and motorcycles, supporting the county’s commitment to sustainability. Governor Bii expressed optimism about the impact this initiative will have on the community.

“This charging station marks a new chapter in our journey towards a cleaner, greener future,” he said.

The conference, focused on the future of energy and sustainable practices, also saw the launch of the ‘Adopt A Lantern’ Campaign. This initiative encourages private sector involvement in public lighting projects, further reflecting the county’s dedication to improving urban infrastructure and energy efficiency.

“The ‘Adopt A Lantern’ Campaign is a call to action for our partners to join us in lighting up our communities and driving forward sustainable development,” Governor Bii explained.

The event was attended by a diverse group of stakeholders, including Members of the County Assembly led by Hon. Julius Sang, financial institutions, engineers, and representatives from the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce. Governor Bii acknowledged their contributions, saying, “I want to thank all our partners for their unwavering support in making these initiatives a reality.”
