The Ministry of Interior has intensified efforts to curb the growing misuse of social media platforms in Kenya, with a focus on combating misinformation, hate speech, and online harassment.

In a statement released on Thursday, January 16, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo announced a high-level meeting involving representatives from social media platforms and telecommunications companies. The discussions aimed to address the increasing concerns over the negative impacts of social media misuse.

“We are alarmed by recent cases of incitement to violence, misinformation, and other criminal activities propagated through digital platforms,” PS Omollo stated. He emphasized the need for all social media companies operating in Kenya to adhere to stricter regulations and ensure greater accountability.

To facilitate this, the government has directed all social media platforms to establish physical offices within Kenya. “To ensure responsibility and accountability in the face of rising disinformation, social media manipulation, and online abuse, all social media organizations must have a physical presence within our jurisdiction,” the Ministry’s statement read.

The move is seen as part of broader efforts by the government to strengthen oversight of digital platforms and ensure compliance with local laws. Telecommunications companies were also urged to collaborate more closely with authorities to mitigate the misuse of their networks for illegal activities.

PS Omollo reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting citizens from the harmful effects of social media misuse. “We must ensure that these platforms are used responsibly to foster unity and constructive engagement rather than division and harm,” he said.

The Ministry’s statement highlights its concern over the role of social media in incitement to violence, particularly in a country with a history of election-related unrest. By establishing local offices, the government aims to improve its ability to monitor and address issues arising from social media activities.
