Vodacom’s Sh272 billion bid to raise stake in Safaricom approved

On November 28, 2025, Safaricom customers noticed that several popular mobile data bundles- especially the No Expiry bundles-had been quietly reduced without any prior announcement.

Some of the affected changes included:

  • The KES 51 non-expiry bundle dropping from 255 MB to 102 MB.

  • The KES 100 bundle dropping from 400 MB to 200 MB.

  • The KES 250 package dropping from 1 GB to 500 MB.

The adjustments effectively doubled the cost per megabyte for many users, sparking widespread online frustration. Numerous subscribers took to social media expressing disappointment, with one user writing:

“I use data to apply for jobs and teach my kids via YouTube. Now every shilling counts double.”

The reduction became a trending topic as consumers accused the telecom giant of altering bundle allocations without transparency.

Safaricom responds: Bundles restored and refunds issued

On December 1, 2025, after sustained public pressure, Safaricom announced that the reduced bundles had been restored to their original allocations. The company attributed the sudden halving of data to a technical issue.

A Safaricom representative noted:

“It was a technical issue, and customers who received lower bundle allocations have been refunded or issued additional data.”

Subscribers also received SMS notifications stating:

“Dear customer, the issue with your non-expiry bundles is fixed, and extra bundles added. We apologise for the inconvenience.”

Following the fix, some bundles appeared to offer even more than before, with the KES 250 non-expiry bundle returning at 1.25 GB during a follow-up spot-check.
