The Parliamentary Security Committee is set to summon Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki for more questioning over the security situation in the North Rift region.

While carrying out an assessment of the security status in West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet Counties on Saturday, the committee received proposals from locals in troubled areas of Chesegon and Turkwel on the current security instability in the area.

The committee’s acting chairperson, Dido Rasso, who is also Saku MP, lauded the Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki, for having deployed the national police reservists (NPR) in Turkana, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Samburu counties.

The committee stated that the security in the region will receive significant support from the reserve officers of the National Police Reserve (NPR), who will be deployed to the area.

The committee further stated that it will discuss this with Kindiki and his education counterpart, Ezekiel Machogu, to ensure all non-functioning learning institutions are brought to functioning mode as soon as possible to enhance learning in the area. He assured locals that closed schools in the region would have to reopen.

This comes days after Kindiki visited the region and asserted that schools closed due to banditry would soon be reopened.

He mentioned the schools earmarked for repair and reopening in the region include Chesegon Primary School, Cheptulel Primary School, Cheptulel Boys Secondary School, Sapulmoi Primary School, Kisaa ECD, Lonyangalem Primary School, Kour Primary School, Songok Primary School, and Karon Primary School.
