A tragic incident occurred along the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway involving a bus carrying students from Chavakali Boys High School in Kisumu, resulting in the loss of one student’s life and leaving at least 33 others injured. The wounded were promptly taken to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu for medical attention, as confirmed by the police following the accident on Monday night.

The bus was transporting the students to Nairobi after the conclusion of the first term’s school closure. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver lost control at the Mamboleo roundabout in Kisumu. Allan Mwangi, the Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander, stated that they were seeking the bus driver for interrogation as part of the investigation into the accident.

He said the driver seemed to have been negotiating the roundabout when he lost control of the bus hit the guard rail and landed on the edge of the road. It was then that the 17-year-old student died on the spot, witnesses said. According to a report from Kondele Police Station, the driver of the bus was not found at the scene.

“It happened that the vehicle was negotiating the said Coptic round about on its way Kisumu general direction from Kakamega when the driver lost control hit a rail guard and the vehicle fell down at the edge of the road and rested on its left side,” the police report details on the accident.

Mwangi mentioned that the remaining students suffered minor injuries and were in a stable condition at the hospital. “Some parents and guardians have arrived to care for them. They are understandably shaken but are out of danger,” he remarked.

He further noted that numerous other parents had contacted to ensure the safety of their children. Ambulances and compassionate individuals assisted in rescuing the students from the accident site.

This comes amid an ongoing campaign to address the rising cases of accidents in the country. Police and officials from the National Transport and Safety Authority are engaged in a campaign to address the menace on the roads. More than 1, 000 people have lost their lives in road accidents since January this year.

Numerous individuals are currently recovering from injuries sustained in various locations following the accidents. Officials highlighted that this incident serves as an indication that at least 30 people perish daily in accidents.

Consequently, many families are grappling with the aftermath of such tragedies, which have far-reaching negative impacts. Speeding emerged as the primary cause of road accidents, along with behaviors such as reckless driving, drunk driving, improper lane usage, and the operation of vehicles that are not roadworthy..
