Nairobi archdiocese rejects political donations, citing ethical concerns

The Archdiocese of Nairobi has taken a firm stance against political donations to the Church, refunding recent contributions from high-profile politicians and reiterating its commitment to maintaining the sanctity of worship spaces.

In a statement released on November 18, 2024, Archbishop Philip A. Anyolo emphasized adherence to directives issued by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) and compliance with the Public Fundraising Appeals Bill 2024. “The Church is called to uphold integrity by refusing contributions that may inadvertently compromise its independence or facilitate unjust enrichment,” he stated.

The statement follows donations made on Sunday, November 17, at Soweto Catholic Church by the Governor of Nairobi and the President. These contributions, amounting to KES 3.8 million in total, were earmarked for projects such as choir support, parish construction, and building a Father’s house. However, the Archdiocese has returned the funds, citing violations of the Public Fundraising Appeals Bill, which requires permits for all fundraising events.

The Church has long discouraged using religious events as platforms for political promotion. “Politicians are urged to refrain from turning the pulpit into a stage for political rhetoric, as such actions undermine the sanctity of worship spaces,” the Archbishop added.

The move aligns with the KCCB’s broader agenda, urging political leaders to demonstrate ethical leadership by addressing key national issues, including corruption, human rights, and economic inequality.

The Archdiocese also declined a promised additional KES 3 million donation from the President. “Politicians are welcome to attend Church for their spiritual nourishment, but they are encouraged to do so as ordinary Christians, without leveraging their positions for political gain,” Anyolo affirmed.
