The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) conducted a raid on Wednesday night, seizing 750 litres of ethanol.

The operation, carried out in collaboration with officers from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the National Police Service (NPS), also resulted in the confiscation of 40 drums, each with a capacity of approximately 250 litres of ethanol storage.

A statement released on Thursday by NACADA suggests that the empty drums may have previously contained ethanol destined for illicit consumption.

This has happened in the wake of recent tragic events, where ten individuals lost their lives and five others suffered blindness after consuming illicit liquor at a bar in Kangai village, Mwea, Kirinyaga County, authorities have emphasized the dangers associated with such substances.

A statement issued by the anti-drug authority underscores the grave risks to health posed by the consumption of counterfeit or illegally produced alcohol, which can lead to severe consequences including blindness and death.

The anti-drug authority has pledged to intensify efforts to combat the consumption of illegal substances, warning that individuals found responsible will be held accountable under the law.

In an effort to combat the illegal production, distribution, and sale of hazardous alcohol and other drugs, members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the authorities via the toll-free line 1192.

In response to the recent incidents, which resulted in multiple fatalities and cases of blindness, swift action has been taken. Six individuals from the same family lost their lives, while five others suffered from blindness after consuming the illicit substance. Tragically, four additional individuals passed away while receiving treatment at local hospitals in the county.

The suspected owner of the bar where the tragic events occurred, John Muriithi Karaya, also known as ‘California,’ has been apprehended. Pending the conclusion of investigations, Karaya will be detained for a period of 20 days.

In light of these events, authorities are emphasizing the critical importance of public vigilance and cooperation in combating the proliferation of illicit substances. Through collaborative efforts and increased vigilance, they aim to prevent further tragedies and safeguard public health and safety.
