The Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU) is mourning the loss of one of its students, Lameck Mwangi Wambui, who tragically passed away in a suspected road accident on Sunday, March 9, 2025.

The university confirmed the incident in an internal memo signed by the Dean of Students, Dr. Obonyo P. Muga, stating that Lameck, a second-year Bachelor of Arts student in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology, lost his life in the accident.

“He hailed from Mwea West District, Kirinyaga County. His interment shall be announced at a later date. May the Lord rest his soul in eternal peace,” read the statement from the Dean’s office.

Following the accident, MMU students took to the streets on Monday morning, holding a peaceful demonstration along Magadi Road to express their concerns about the incident. The university acknowledged the protest in a press statement, stating that it recognizes the grief and pain the students are experiencing.

“The University Management wishes to convey deepest condolences to the family, friends, and students during this period of grief. This is a profound loss, and we join together in mourning a bright and promising young life,” read the statement from Mutia Mwandikwa, the Manager of Corporate Affairs.

MMU urged students to remain calm as investigations into the accident continue. “We urge our students to allow the relevant authorities to carry out their investigations. The University Management is always committed to ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment for our students,” the statement added.

As the community mourns, there is growing concern over student safety along Magadi Road, which has been the scene of previous accidents. MMU students continue to call for better road safety measures to prevent further tragedies.
