Kenya is poised to host the Africa Academy, a flagship initiative by Grammy Global Ventures (GGV) to expand its footprint on the continent. The Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports confirmed the development, citing Kenya’s strategic advantages and compliance with the $2.5 million financial obligations.
“The project is a milestone in positioning Kenya as the epicenter of entertainment in Africa,” said Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen in a statement. The Academy will feature a headquarters and regional centers, with plans to stage Grammy-branded events in Rwanda, Nigeria, and South Africa.
The collaboration underscores Kenya’s ambition to become a hub for creative arts and media. The Ministry highlighted that the Africa Academy will empower local music creators by providing access to Grammy’s technological resources, networks, and expertise. “This will not only showcase our cultural heritage globally but also contribute significantly to our local economy through job creation, business activity, and enhanced media production infrastructure,” the statement read.
Kenya has already met the financial commitments required under the September 25, 2023, agreement, benefiting from the Kenya Shilling’s appreciation against the US Dollar. This cost efficiency has bolstered Kenya’s bid as the preferred host country. However, the Ministry clarified that at least two founding member countries must also pay the $2.5 million fee to operationalize the Academy.
In preparation, Kenya plans to host the Academy at the 160-acre Digital Media City in Konza Technopolis. Financing agreements with the Republic of Korea for construction are in the final stages, with the project currently at the design phase.
