The Senate voted Friday to impeach Kisii County Deputy Governor Robert Monda after a majority of senators upheld charges brought by the county assembly that included abuse of office, gross violation of the constitution, gross misconduct and crimes under national law.
The vote came after an overnight session that stretched into the early hours of Friday. Senators voted on each of the four charges against Monda.
On the charge of gross violation of the constitution, 39 senators voted to impeach, three opposed, and one abstained. For abuse of office, the vote was 39-3 with one abstention. Gross misconduct drew 35 votes for impeachment, seven against and one abstention. On the charge of crimes under national law, 32 senators voted for impeachment, 10 opposed, and one abstained.
A key allegation was that Monda solicited a $6,000 bribe from Dennis Mokaya to secure him a job at the Gusii Water and Sanitation Company Limited, which Monda failed to do. Mokaya testified that his wife suffered a miscarriage after Monda didn’t follow through.
Monda was also accused of intimidating a brother using his office.
Kisii Governor Simba Arati now has 14 days to nominate a new deputy governor, whose name must be approved by the county assembly within 60 days.
