Ruto directs end to power outages as Kenya-EU trade deal nears signature

Kenya’s Cabinet has directed the Ministry of Energy to end frequent power outages across the country that have hurt investment and impacted residents, President William Ruto announced Wednesday.

Following a Cabinet meeting, Ruto said the body had resolved to unbundle the national transmission line system to separate the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity.

The move aims to prevent nationwide blackouts when one section of the power grid fails.

To ease overloading on transmission lines that has caused recurring outages, Ruto said the Cabinet is pushing for the construction of a delayed power line between Bomet and Narok funded in 2016 but stalled over legal disputes.

The Cabinet was also briefed that negotiations have concluded on the Kenya-European Union Economic Partnership Agreement, which Ruto said is expected to be signed at State House next week.

The deal would give Kenya greater access to the EU market.
