The impact of Kenya’s bold infrastructure initiatives on its economy

December 30, 2024

The Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport Kipchumba Murkomen has endorsed the text of a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on Public Private Partnership projects in Kenya. Once signed, the MoC will establish specific working arrangements between the two countries that will create seamless communication and a working channel

Speaking at the Kenya-Japan Quality Infrastructure Conference, Murkomen appreciated the long-standing relationship between the Ministry of Roads and Transport with Japan as a development partner and a friend. He noted that Japan’s quality infrastructure projects align with Kenya’s constitutional imperative of intergenerational equity.

Kenya has collaborated with Japan on numerous projects in the Country’s six decades of friendship, the most recent of which include the upgrading of Ngong Road in Nairobi and the construction of  bridges in Mombasa and Kilifi counties. Japan is also involved in new major projects such as the Mombasa Gateway Bridge, which will be the longest in Africa.

The history of development cooperation between japan and Kenya in the transport sector is rich in scope and depth, Japan has supported Kenya in undertaking technically difficult and resource-intensive development projects, such as building bridges in Nyali, Mtwapa, Kilifi and Sabaki
The CS noted that Japan’s quality infrastructure projects align with Kenya’s constitutional imperative of intergenerational equity. He said this would not only ease the movement of people and goods between the Island and the South Coast but will also be a tourist attraction.
