The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kenya has revealed that the government will be hosting the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit from May 7 to 9, 2024. Scheduled to be held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, the summit aims to convene African government officials, policymakers, farmer organizations, and private sector representatives.

”The objective of the Summit is to highlight the crucial role of fertilizer and soil health in stimulating pro-poor productivity growth in African agriculture and to agree on an African Fertilizer and Soil Health Action Plan as well as the Soils Initiative for Africa,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Monday

The Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit coincides with Kenya’s recent controversy surrounding the authenticity of fertilizers distributed through the government subsidy program.
A month ago, concerns about fake fertilizer in the Kenyan market prompted an investigation into its approval and distribution via the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB). The Senate initiated a probe into the matter, summoning Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi to provide clarification.
Linturi maintains that while the fertilizer may be substandard, it is not counterfeit. As a result of the investigation, the KEL chemicals factory, which supplied the government with a quantity of ‘substandard fertilizer,’ has been shut down.
