Cybersecurity solutions provider Kaspersky has warned potential buyers of new iPhone 14 smartphone models over the presence of fraudsters planning to scam them.

Kaspersky has reported several phishing pages claiming to sell the iPhone 14s, with the primary aim of stealing their Apple ID accounts and money.

More than 8,700 iPhone-related phishing sites were found before the new smartphone was introduced. Immediately after it became known that Apple will be releasing the new iPhone 14, fraudsters started setting up fake websites with offers to pre-order the device at a discount or to buy it before the announcement.

Hackers use images of older phone versions to draw users’ attention because the official shots of the iPhone 14 have not yet been posted online. Funds will be deducted from the victim’s bank card when they enter their bank card information to make the transaction, but they won’t really receive the order.

Cybercriminals can access the buyer’s Apple ID by deceiving them into paying for an order on a false page as well (an account used to access Apple services such as the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud, iMessage or FaceTime). They then have access to all of their victim’s email addresses, login credentials, contact information, and financial data.

Kaspersky’s Security expert Olga Svistunova stated that Cybercriminals often monitor new trends much more actively than ordinary users and are constantly looking for something trendy that would interest people, and therefore can be used as bait to trick them into entering credentials or payment data.

The victim’s iCloud, which stores their private images, document scans, and other sensitive data, is also accessible to cybercriminals. Hackers may later exploit these images to steal identities or even subject victims to blackmail. As a result of pressure from the attackers and the warning that they risk losing their ordered device at any time, the victim may finally give in and start making payments.
