Joseph Irungu, also known as Jowie, challenges the High Court’s ruling that condemned him to death for the 2018 murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.

The notice, reviewed by Citizen Digital, outlines Jowie’s intent to contest both his conviction and subsequent sentencing by Lady Justice Grace Nzioka.

According to the document filed by his attorney Andrew Muge, Jowie’s appeal specifically targets the decisions rendered by Lady Justice Grace Nzioka on February 9, 2024, both in verbal and written form.

These decisions culminated in Jowie’s conviction for murder and the imposition of the death penalty on March 13, 2024.

Arguments that led to Jowie Irungu’s death sentence

March 13, 2024

The appeal is centered on disputing the conviction and the severity of the sentence. Jowie plans to attend the appeal hearing personally.

Jowie’s conviction stemmed from his involvement in the murder of Monica Kimani at her residence in Lamuria Gardens. Justice Nzioka, in delivering the verdict, justified the death penalty as commensurate with the gravity of the crime and the evidence presented during the trial, along with considerations of Jowie’s character.

The appeal signifies Jowie’s continued legal battle to contest the outcome of his trial and sentencing in the Monica Kimani murder case.
