The government has initiated plans to renovate and improve the official residence of the Deputy President, following concerns raised by the current occupant regarding its dilapidated condition.

The refurbishment project, dubbed the ‘Hustlers Mansion,’ will receive funding amounting to nearly KES 600 million, according to the Budget Implementation Review Report issued by the Controller of Budget.

The report, disclosed by Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang’o on Tuesday, highlights that KES100 million has already been utilized for essential repairs at the residence, which initially incurred a construction cost of KES 450 million, financed by taxpayers.

Construction commenced in July of the previous year, as confirmed by Nyakang’o during a meeting with governors on February 14, 2024.

The necessity for refurbishment was underscored by the Deputy President’s delayed occupancy of the Karen residence, as disclosed in March of the preceding year.

Leakage issues with the roof and malfunctioning equipment were cited as reasons for the delayed occupation. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration was accused of neglecting the maintenance of the residence, with allegations suggesting it was part of a broader strategy to undermine President William Ruto during his tenure as Deputy President.

Moreover, it was alleged that the Deputy President had been personally covering utility expenses. Deputy President Gachagua emphasized the dire condition of the residence, deeming it uninhabitable due to structural issues, including a leaking roof and malfunctioning borehole pump.

However, by May 2023, reports indicated that Gachagua had relocated to his official residence in Karen, where he has since been conducting official meetings and engagements.

Situated on a 10-acre plot in the Karen suburb, the official Deputy President’s residence features a two-story structure, an office, servant quarters, and an expansive swimming pool. Additionally, a church was constructed on the premises in 2019 by Deputy President Ruto.
