Health CS Susan Nakumicha promises affordable healthcare

The government, through the Ministry of Health, has promised to construct a 2000-bed multispecialty for Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).

Speaking when he toured the hospital, Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Health Susan Nakumicha said the construction will take place in the Kilombe area in Uasin Gishu County as part of increasing the capacity of the renowned healthcare provider.

“We visited the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and discussed the construction of a modern 2,000-bed Multi-Specialty MTRH in Kiplombe area.” said the CS.

The CS expressed optimism that the move will help in boosting the affordable healthcare program, which is a key pillar in President William Ruto’s first stint at the helm.

“This new facility will contribute to the ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing access to quality and affordable healthcare for all.” She said.

The CS further praised the hospital for its commitment to offering quality healthcare services to Kenyans, saying she was particularly impressed with the facility’s renal unit, which demonstrated high standards of healthcare.

She also promised to help in addressing the issues addressed to her by the hospital, including poor working conditions and better remuneration of staff.

On the status of the ‘Linda Mama’ initiative, the CS refuted claims that the current government had abolished the program, which has attracted widespread public outcry.

In response to the same claim, the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) also quelled rumours of the possible discontinuation of the program.

“NHIF wishes to assure the public that the cover is still active as mothers continue to benefit massively. The fund, therefore, urges the public to ignore the false message shared online,” NHIF said.

Linda Mama is a government-funded program that seeks to cater to expectant mothers and their infants during delivery in all public health facilities.
