Former Education CS George Magoha Lands New Job At Maseno University

George Magoha, the former Cabinet Secretary for Education (CS), has joined Maseno University in Kisumu County as a Professor of Surgery at the School of Medicine.

This was confirmed by Maseno University’s Director of Public Relations, Dr. Owen McOnyango on Tuesday, January 17, 2023.

“He is an asset to us due to his vast experience and strong professional background. Our School of Medicine is relatively new and to get an experienced and strong personality like Magoha is definitely a plus for us,” he said.

Magoha was appointed chairman, dean, and principal in the College of Health of Sciences and later deputy vice-chancellor at the University of Nairobi having served between the years 2005 and 2015.

In 2016, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Kenya National Examination Council, by President Uhuru Kenyatta. His immediate task as the Chairman of KNEC was to reform the council to arrest the widespread academic dishonesty and corruption in the administration of national examinations.

He is credited to have dismantled cartels that had propagated exam cheating for years and restoring the credibility of exams in Kenya.

On 1 March 2019, he was nominated as the Cabinet Secretary for Education in the Kenyan Cabinet and was sworn in on 26 March 2019, replacing Amina Mohamed, who was transferred to the Sports docket.

Magoha held the position of CS for Education until October 27, 2022, when Ezekiel Machogu took over under President William Ruto.

He was awarded a scholarship to study human medicine at the University of Lagos, in Nigeria. His studies took him through the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, and the University College Hospital, Ibadan, both in Nigeria, and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, in the United Kingdom.

He is trained as a specialized urologist and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Prof. Magoha began his surgical career as an intern at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and rose to the post of Senior Resident and Clinical Lecturer in Surgery.

Additionally, he worked as a consultant surgeon in numerous renowned hospitals in Lagos, Nigeria, and was also a lecturer in the same facility.

Prof. Magoha worked his way up until 2000 when he was appointed full professor of surgery, having started at the University of Nairobi in 1988 as a lecturer in urological surgery.

Maseno University School of Medicine’s Dean, Prof. Stephen Ogendo, claimed that Prof. Magoha’s networks would be beneficial to the institution.
