Former Chief Justice David K. Maraga has issued a powerful New Year message urging Kenyans to uphold constitutional values and demand accountability from leaders as the nation navigates a challenging political and economic landscape.
Reflecting on 2024, Maraga lamented the “killing, maiming, and abduction of young Kenyans,” labeling it a moral crisis. “If we are truly a people sworn to the sanctity of life and the dignity of every citizen, then we must stand bold in the truth of our Constitution,” he said, condemning unlawful detentions and calling for immediate release of detained youth.
Maraga emphasized the importance of fidelity to the Constitution, recalling its promise of transformation since its adoption in 2010. He pointed to the June-July 2024 protests, dubbed “Gen Z,” as a symbol of Kenyan resilience and demand for justice. “It was the desire of Kenyans from all walks of life to address the culture of impunity,” he noted.
Highlighting Kenya’s economic struggles, Maraga urged immediate reforms in vital sectors such as education and healthcare, alongside efforts to create jobs and restructure the tax regime. “We must reset the economy to create decent jobs for our youth and guarantee fairness and sustainability of the tax burden. This is possible. The country has done this before and can do it again,” he affirmed.
Despite the year’s hardships, Maraga praised Kenyans for holding public institutions accountable amidst resistance from the regime. He reminded leaders of their duty to ensure instruments of power are not abused. “When fairness and humility are the first thing we meet at the doors of our offices, human dignity and responsibility will fuel our work,” he stated.
Looking ahead, Maraga called 2025 “a year of accountability,” urging Kenyans to safeguard constitutionalism and justice. “Let us determine that 2025 is the year these values become an inseparable part of us,” he concluded, wishing all Kenyans a prosperous New Year.
