Elgeyo Marakwet leaders demand action on banditry

Elgeyo Marakwet leaders are calling for urgent government intervention to address escalating banditry in the region, citing persistent attacks that have disrupted livelihoods and instilled fear among residents. In a joint statement, county officials and elected representatives emphasized the need for immediate deployment of additional security forces, arguing that current measures have failed to deter criminal elements operating within the area.

Residents of the Kerio Valley, a hotspot for bandit activity, have been forced to abandon their homes, farms, and schools due to constant threats. Leaders lament that bandits, emboldened by weak enforcement, continue to stage attacks, stealing livestock and endangering lives. Several villages have witnessed waves of violence, prompting local officials to raise alarms over the growing humanitarian crisis. Families displaced by the raids struggle to find shelter, while schools remain deserted, affecting education in the region.

County officials have urged the national government to prioritize Elgeyo Marakwet in its security agenda, pushing for sustained military operations to flush out armed groups. They argue that temporary interventions, such as periodic police deployments, have done little to address the root causes of banditry. Calls for establishing permanent security outposts along critical borders have intensified, with leaders stating that swift action is needed before the situation spirals further out of control.

Community elders have also joined the push for government response, underscoring the economic toll of banditry. Many farmers have been unable to cultivate their land, leading to food shortages and financial strain. The loss of livestock, a key source of wealth in the region, has left families destitute. Local youth, unable to attend school due to insecurity, face uncertain futures, further deepening the cycle of poverty.

The issue has sparked broader concerns about the effectiveness of Kenya’s security policies in pastoral regions, with critics accusing the government of neglecting areas prone to cattle rustling and armed conflicts. Leaders vow to keep up the pressure, warning that unless decisive action is taken, communities will continue to suffer under the grip of relentless attacks. The people of Elgeyo Marakwet now await meaningful intervention to restore stability and rebuild shattered lives.
