Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang has stated that during Grade 6 and 9 assessments, schools will not permit police officers to be present. Instead, police officers will solely handle the collection and delivery of examination papers.

“Police officers will not be allowed in examination centres during CBC assessments for Grades 6 and 9,” the PS said when he attended the inaugural Annual Symposium on Competency-Based Assessment.

He mentioned that during the KPSEA assumptive test for Grade 6 learners, approximately 60% of their marks derive from KPSEA formative tests conducted in Grades 4 and 5. Kipsang explained that teachers have been consistently conducting assessments for learners from Grade 4 onward.

He emphasized that this assessment process is a continuation of the school-based evaluation, with only teachers and students involved. Therefore, they intend to maintain this arrangement, allowing teachers and students to proceed as they have been.

Regarding Grade 12 assessments, due to their significance, police officers will still be involved. However, for regular assessments, they aim to avoid police presence.

Additionally, he mentioned that the ministry plans to provide 16,000 new classrooms to accommodate the initial group of Grade 9 students in 2025. Belio stated that these classrooms will be completed by January 2025, in time for schools to enroll Grade 9 students.

“By the time our schools open in January we shall have availed 16,000 classrooms to accommodate Grade 9 learners. As government this is a responsibility we shall ensure is done,” Belio said.
