The Kenya Women in Insurance Association has been launched.  The Association aims to create a platform to promote the representation of women in the insurance industry through education, mentorship, and collaboration.

Statistics show that the number of women leaders in the insurance industry remains low, especially in the more senior levels and C-suite. While speaking at the launch of the event AKI’s Executive Director, Mr. Tom Gichuhi noted that, “A decade ago we only had one women insurance company CEO. Today, we have 11 women heading insurance companies”. He further noted that it was still not an ideal situation and that there is room for more women at the table and he urged women to go out and stake their claim.

The Insurance Regulator Authority Commissioner, Mr Godfrey Kiptum, assured the association of support from IRA. He noted that women and men working together as partners makes for better organisations and better society “Its not competition, it is partnership, and this will take this industry to the next level”.

The Kenya Women in Insurance was launched at the side-lines of the African Insurance Organisation (AIO) Conference that has been taking place at the Edge Convention Centre in Nairobi this week. The launch was graced by the current and past Presidents of Professional Insurance Ladies Association of Africa (PILA).  While addressing the delegates, Dr. Tonia Smart, former president of PILA noted the journey that the Association has taken over the last four decades. “Through attending the AIO Conference annually, we have been able to rally and support the formation of Associations for women in insurance in Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, South Africa, Mauritius and now Kenya, we now want to move to the north of Africa”.

The Association was founded by ten women working in various organisations within the insurance industry. They include Catherine Wahome as President, Njeri Njomo as Vice President, Rose Wanda as General Secretary, Hazel King’ori as Social/Publicity Secretary, Irene Makau as Assistant Social/Publicity Secretary, Stella Njunge as Treasurer, Jane Onimbo as Membership Secretary, Beatrice Onduso as Education Secretary, Diana Sawe and Madeline Nangayo as Ex- Officio Members.
